Slowing down...

It has been days since I have had a rootbeer. What is going on with me? I have 3 weeks left to indulge in this drink without the guilty "I'm trying to lose the baby weight" lingering over my head. I did have a sip of Karee's rootbeer float the other night. It was pretty good but I am not too big on ice cream so I would rather have just the rootbeer. I am going to make an effort to do a review or two this week.

Sweet tooth quenched

It has been spring-like the past couple of days (in the 70's). We have been spending all of our awake time outside it seems. The sun and warm weather also brought a sweet tooth my way. All I could think about today was cake - unusual for the non pregnant Sara. I tried some fruit but that was just too healthy. So, it led me to the spare fridge for a rootbeer.

Jones Brand rootbeer is made from pure cane sugar. Thus, it is a lot sweeter than the other brands. I really like it though and it hit the spot. Karee thinks it might be a tad too sweet for him. However, when you want cake this brand will do! I have seen other flavors of Jones pop in bottles but we have the cans. I bet it would taste even more excellent if it were fountain. I give this brand a 8.

My Grandma Sams has been helping us out with some reviews this week also. She has had Barq's fountain brand rootbeer. That was the first brand that really got me into this rootbeer kick so I understand her satisfaction with this drink. She reviewed it as a 9 and I concur with her. Of course, I would never disagree with my grandma so a 9 goes to the fountain Barq's! Thanks for being our special guest judge Grandma!!

Sick kids & rootbeer do not mix

Well, we were going to go to a place locally that brews their own rootbeer but both the kids have ear infections and Jack now has pink eye so we have to stay home. We did buy some vanilla ice cream for rootbeer floats after dinner. Yesterday, I was concerned that Grant was not moving around enough. The dr tells you to drink juice and lay on your left side for an hour. Well, I figured drinking a rootbeer was as good if not better than drinking juice. So, I had one. An hour later, I was not satisfied with the movement so had another rootbeer. Then he started moving around. This led me to review Dr. Brown's brand...

Perhaps I am partial to the name...Dr. Brown's. Could this be a long lost family secret that my husband and in laws are not telling me??!! Are we part of a rootbeer dynasty?! I guess not...it seems to me the tree nursery business and brewing of rootbeer do not mix. This brand is pretty good, however. It isn't too sweet and it comes in a nice brown can that has that old fashioned feel to it. I feel this brand is pretty good - I would say a 4. It isn't something I would seek out on my own though, another more recognized brand will do just fine...

Kids & Rootbeer

Do kids and rootbeer mix? It makes Jack bounce off the walls. This is not a figure of speech, he has a dime sized yellow-green bruise in the middle of his forehead to prove it. He literally ran into the door frame. It makes Kara squeal for more not wanting to share with anyone. She also gets some wicked burps that should be coming out of a 40 year old man, not a 1 year old girl. It makes Grant who is nestled in a 98.5 degree water bath have hiccups and move about like there is an alien trying to bust out of my abdominal wall. This sugary drink seems to work instantly. So, the question is - Is rootbeer evil??

Onto a review:

What is this stuff?! I tried to drink Faygo brand rootbeer yesterday after waking from a 3 hour slumber in the middle of the afternoon. I took 2 drinks and decided I could not finish the bottle. Karee thinks it tastes like Pepto Bismol. I think it tastes like the plastic bottle it comes in. It is not sweet, it is brown and carbonated but clearly NOT rootbeer. It has a horrible aftertaste as well. I had to get a different brand to get the taste out of my mouth. Faygo gets a 1.

Work sucks and then you drink root beer

Had to work late tonight cause someone must have spilled their root beer on the firewalls in the data center. Ok not really, but stuff wasn't working and that is as good as an explanation as any. Maybe Wednesday the 11th is just the new Friday the 13th. If they did spill their root beer it was prolly Faygo root beer. Sara is right that stuff is nothing compared to all the other brands we have tried so far.

When I got home and Sara had already put the kids to bed and was in the process of going to bed herself. I missed seeing Kara and I decided to try to keep my promise to Jack so I "woke him up" (he was playing in the dark at his bedroom door) and read him a few bedtime stories from our new book. That made the long work day a bit more bearable.

I ended up settling down in front of the laptop later cause I couldn't sleep. So I decided to try a Stewart's and write my first review. Here goes:

Stewart's root beer isn't as super sweet as some of the others, or have a after taste reminiscent of Pepto Bismol like the Faygo, but is good simple root beer. It goes down smooth and doesn't make you burp all night long. So far it isn't making my list of favorites but it is still good in a pinch. Only having 4 bottles to a pack and the premium price for a middle of the road root beer doesn't do it any favors. I give it a solid 3. Haven't found an all out favorite yet but IBC, Barq's, and Mug are all still in the running. Although for some reason I still think you just have to use A&W for floats. I grew up making them that way and I guess it is just kind of nostalgia.

Is rootbeer evil?

It all started with what one would assume a simple pregnancy craving. Then it became an obsession. I can't get through the day without it.

A simple trip back from Cincinnati left me parched one evening. My husband stops at a Speedway and comes with a giant fountain Barq's rootbeer. After that, the love affair started. The next day, I needed more.

I tried to put it out of my mind for a few days but within 2 days I was requesting rootbeer. I decided that bribery would be the best way to get Karee to bring me some home - assuming he would pick up a 12 pack.

$32 dollars and 9 brands of rootbeer later, I cannot stop. I don't even try. I have tried almost all of the brands, some are better than others. Karee is in on it with me and we discuss the brand of the evening as we sip on the sudsy sweet goodness.

Stay tuned for this weekends official taste test. Judges: Karee & Sara Brown.
